Microstructure measurements along a quasi-meridional transect in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean

چکیده
[1] This study presents vertical profiles of turbulence parameters obtained in the upper 100 m of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean along a transect from tropical permanently stratified waters to subpolar seasonally stratified waters in July–August 2009. The focus is to fully characterize the vertical mixing along this transect for further studies related to phytoplankton and nutrient distributions. Derived values of temperature eddy diffusivity KT, of temperature variance dissipation rate cT, and of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate ɛ indicate a northward increase of turbulent mixing below the mixed layer. In the northern stations where the wind stress is sufficiently high, the vertical distributions of ɛ in the mixed layer follow the wind stress scaling. The related low wind-scaling factors, and the low values of ɛ encountered at this cruise, are in agreement with a strongly stratified upper water column at midday in summer.

Identifying the processes controlling the distribution of H2O2 in surface waters along a meridional transect in the eastern Atlantic
[1] Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an important oxidant for many bio-relevant trace metals and organic compounds and has potential as a tracer for mixing in near surface waters. In this study we combine H2O2 and bio-optical measurements with satellite data for a meridional transect from 46 N to 26 S in the eastern Atlantic in order to determine the key processes affecting its distribution. Surface...
متن کاملIodine isotopes species fingerprinting environmental conditions in surface water along the northeastern Atlantic Ocean
Concentrations and species of iodine isotopes ((127)I and (129)I) provide vital information about iodine geochemistry, environmental conditions and water masses exchange in oceans. Despite extensive investigations of anthropogenic (129)I in the Arctic Ocean and the Nordic Seas, concentrations of the isotope in the Atlantic Ocean are, however, still unknown. We here present first data on (129)I ...
متن کاملMeasurements of the stable carbon isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon in the northeastern Atlantic and Nordic Seas during summer 2012
The stable carbon isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (δCDIC) in seawater was measured in a batch process for 552 samples collected during two cruises in the northeastern Atlantic and Nordic Seas from June to August 2012. One cruise was part of the UK Ocean Acidification research programme, and the other was a repeat hydrographic transect of the Extended Ellett Line. In combinatio...
متن کاملLatitudinal distribution of Trichodesmium spp. and N2 fixation in the Atlantic Ocean
We have determined the latitudinal distribution of Trichodesmium spp. abundance and community N2 fixation in the Atlantic Ocean along a meridional transect from ca. 30 N to 30 S in November–December 2007 and April–May 2008. The observations from both cruises were highly consistent in terms of absolute magnitude and latitudinal distribution, showing a strong association between Trichodesmium abu...
متن کاملThe Distribution of Dissolved Iron in the West Atlantic Ocean
Iron (Fe) is an essential trace element for marine life. Extremely low Fe concentrations limit primary production and nitrogen fixation in large parts of the oceans and consequently influence ocean ecosystem functioning. The importance of Fe for ocean ecosystems makes Fe one of the core chemical trace elements in the international GEOTRACES program. Despite the recognized importance of Fe, our ...
